Toti is just the most recent politician who demonstrates that serious corruption is business as usual for the extreme right coalition. It is unfortunate and harmful that Italians have been conditioned to view corruption and conflict of interest as just another fact of life. By any measure, corruption, especially by politicians in the far right, is not only rampant but is protected by Meloni if the corrupt politician has any value to her extreme right coalition. The details of Toti’s corrupt dealings with Aldo Spinelli are no different than the hundreds of times that Italian politicians were involved in corrupt business relationships. Until Italy adopts conflict of interest laws like the rest of the EU countries, and genuinely enforces violations of corruption laws, we will continue to have our political system heavily influenced by corruption instead of being focused on how to make Italy a better country in which to live.

The European Union and NATO represent significant obstacles to Putin’s attempt to conquer Eastern European countries such as Ukraine in his effort to rebuild the USSR. Since he took control of Russia in 1999, Putin has sought to weaken the EU and NATO primarily by influencing the political leaders of European countries. Putin has offered significant oil price discounts and other benefits to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. In 2018, Putin donated 9.4 million euros to Marine Le Pen’s political campaign. Salvini wears a T-shirt with Putin’s face to communicate to Italy and the world that he and Putin are partners.

In October 2018, a Salvini aide, Gianluca Savoini, attended a meeting with two Italians and three Russian government officials to discuss the transfer of 80 million euros of Russian oil funds to Salvini’s League party and its campaign for the European elections. Although Salvini categorically denied knowledge of such a meeting, unfortunately for Matteo, the entire hour and a half conversation was recorded and you can read the full transcript here:

IGNAZIO BENITO LA RUSSA

Ignazio Benito La Russa, co-founder of FdL together with Meloni, is the first neo-fascist politician to hold the position of President of the Senate. Ignazio Benito La Russa ‘s father was secretary of Benito Mussolini’s fascist party. On 12 February 2011, La Russa kicked and insulted journalist Corrado Formigli for asking him questions about Berlusconi’s sex scandals. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy, La Russa suggested on social media that the unhygienic handshake should be abandoned and replaced with the fascist salute. In March 2023, La Russa defined the Via Rasella attack, carried out by Italian partisans against Nazi forces, which subsequently led to the Fosse Ardeatine massacre, as a “shameful event of the Italian resistance”, instead of recognizing the truth that brave Italian partisans were fighting against Mussolini’s fascism.
