The Challenge
In January 2023, Salvini announced that “The left should surrender, we will govern this country for the next ten years.” Salvini is not trying to hide the fact that the foremost goal of the current governing coalition is to maintain and increase its power instead of working hard to make Italy a better country.
Like all aspiring autocrats, the far-right coalition tries to keep Italians unaware of the poor job being done by the politicians by:
Messaging that social and economic issues are too complex for the average Italian to understand.
However, the truth is that every social and economic problem can be easily understood if explained in a non-technical way. The reason politicians convey the inaccurate message of complexity is because they want us to believe they understand Italy’s problems, so that we can vote for them and make them solve those problems.
Dividing us by persuading everybody that another person’s problems have nothing to do with our problems.
Every important issue in Italy affects EVERY Italian in a personal way, but far-right politicians want us to believe that the problem of a particular group does not concern people outside of that group. For example, youth unemployment and underemployment increase the financial burden on parents when their adult children continue to live with them due to their adult children’s inability to support themselves. Furthermore, they all suffer from the extremely high level of youth unemployment, as not enough taxes are collected to pay pensions and support the Italian healthcare system.
Spreading misinformation.
Many far-right politicians manipulate information through newspapers, social media, and television by spreading lies which causes us to lose faith in Italian institutions. A well-known example is politicians like Meloni stating or hinting that women are partially to blame for violent crimes against women because women wear short skirts or drink alcohol.
